Bruno Guimaraes stepped off the bench to rescue Arsenal for the second time in three Premier League outings, scoring the decisive goal as the defending champions came from behind to beat Leeds United 2-1 at the Emirates. The £75 million summer arrival had already supplied the crucial opener in a 2-0 win at Sunderland last month; this time his strike on his full home debut secured three points after Leeds had led from the 55th minute.

The Brazilian is the first player this season to score twice as a substitute, with both efforts arriving from outside the box. His contribution justified the heavy investment in a midfielder already in his peak years, even as Arsenal continue to juggle an abundance of high-quality central options. Manager Mikel Arteta was clear about the standards required after Guimaraes’ quieter full league debut in the recent 3-0 loss at Brighton: “He wasn’t at that level against Brighton, and this is the level for Arsenal. Every week, every game, every minute, every action, you have to be at that level. Today was much better.”

The victory—Arsenal’s fifth in six league matches—moved them level on points with leaders Manchester City. Yet the title defence has been far from smooth. The Gunners have now fallen behind in three of their last four league games; only a David Raya penalty save prevented them trailing at Sunderland as well. For long spells against Daniel Farke’s Leeds they were well below their best, before Riccardo Calafiori’s equaliser and Guimaraes’ winner turned the match.

Ally McCoist, commentating for TNT Sports, noted that Leeds were “brilliant for one hour” and that Arteta’s substitutions supplied exactly what was needed. “That’s what champions do,” he said, while adding that Leeds could leave with their heads held high.

Defensive issues remain a talking point. Arsenal conceded the fewest goals in the league en route to last season’s title, yet they have already shipped five in six matches this campaign. The partnership of Gabriel Magalhães and William Saliba is widely regarded as one of the finest in the world, and the side has clearly missed the Frenchman’s composure. New £55 million signing Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa is still adapting, while Ecuador international Piero Hincapié—signed permanently this summer after a loan from Bayer Leverkusen—was carried off during the post-match warm-down after a late substitute appearance. He was seen clutching his right ankle and has already battled muscular problems this term, leaving uncertainty over his availability.

Calafiori, by contrast, continues to offer an attacking outlet from left-back. His goal against Leeds was his first in the league this season, and no defender has been involved in more Premier League goals so far (one goal and two assists).

Arteta reflected on the recent Brighton defeat: “The last time we put our shirts on, something was missing… From being exceptional and being the champions to being extremely average… is a really thin line. So if you don’t want it more than the opponent, you are not able to cope emotionally with certain situations, you’re going to suffer… We certainly done that.”

Further questions surround the attack. Arteta started Kai Havertz up front despite the German returning early from international duty with a hamstring concern, leaving Viktor Gyökeres on the bench once more. The Swedish striker scored four times during the recent break but has yet to start a Premier League game and has looked short of the required standard in his limited cameos. With Christos Tzolis sidelined by a hamstring injury sustained with Greece and Eberechi Eze out of form, Noni Madueke was given a chance on the left wing. Arteta described the England international—who was omitted from the latest national squad due to limited minutes—as the best player in training over the previous ten days.

The three points keep Arsenal in the title conversation, but the recurring need for late rescues, defensive vulnerability without Saliba, and uncertainty over the forward line suggest Arteta still has several issues to resolve if the Gunners are to mount a sustained defence of their crown.
