Manchester United technical director Jason Wilcox is understood to prefer former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe as a potential replacement should the club part ways with Michael Carrick. The club have been linked with a range of candidates amid ongoing scrutiny of Carrick’s position.

Julian Nagelsmann is also under consideration. The former Bayern Munich and Germany coach is reported to be interested in the role if United decide to make a change. Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has additionally been mentioned among the club’s preferred options. United are said to have opened discussions with Antonio Conte, the former Chelsea and Tottenham manager, about a possible return to the Premier League.

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has been linked with the job, though any move would reportedly require a world-record compensation fee to the south-coast club. However, Hurzeler is not believed to be interested in the position should it become available.

Elsewhere, Arsenal are targeting a January move for Atlético Madrid winger Alex Baena. The 25-year-old Spain international, a World Cup winner, is on the Gunners’ radar. Arsenal are also monitoring 21-year-old Monza striker Gustavo Varela, with Napoli and Benfica among other clubs said to be interested in the Portuguese forward.

In Italy, Juventus defender Gleison Bremer is wanted by Bayer Leverkusen. The 29-year-old Brazilian could leave Turin in January.

These reports reflect the current market for both managerial and player targets as clubs assess their options ahead of the January window and potential mid-season changes.
