Chelsea are targeting Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong as they look to replace Enzo Fernández, but sources indicate any January deal would be far from straightforward. According to Football Insider, the Blues would need to offer at least £50 million to interest the Spanish club in selling the 29-year-old Dutch international.
De Jong is currently sidelined with injury but is close to a return and could feature in the coming weeks. That impending comeback is expected to complicate Chelsea’s pursuit, as Barcelona have been waiting for him to rejoin the squad. He has been a regular in the midfield since arriving from Ajax and is now one of the longer-serving players at the club. Under contract until the summer of 2029, Barcelona face no pressure to sell, even while he recovers. He has already made more than 60 Champions League appearances and remains an important option as the club chase trophies on multiple fronts.
Sources describe the £50 million figure as a clear starting point, with Chelsea likely needing to go higher to tempt a sale. The move forms part of the club’s efforts to fill the midfield gap left by Fernández’s summer departure to Manchester City. Chelsea had also explored a deal for Monaco’s Lamine Camara, agreeing a fee of around £47 million before the French side withdrew on deadline day. The Blues were reportedly angry at the manner of the collapse and described Monaco’s conduct as unprofessional; relations between the clubs would need to be repaired before any further business. As a result, a return for Camara appears unlikely for now.
De Jong is the latest name linked with the role, though Barcelona’s reluctance to lose a settled player with several years left on his contract means negotiations would be challenging even if Chelsea meet or exceed the stated valuation.
